摘要

As the population of older performance horses continues to grow, so does the need for veterinary care that provides optimum support for these aging athletes. Several studies demonstrate that chronic lameness is the most common reason that older, athletic horses are retired or euthanized. As horses age, they often develop a variety of painful and performance limiting musculoskeletal conditions including osteoarthritis. While many osteoarthritic joints are easily medicated in the horse, others, such asthose along the ventral spine, are actually impossible to directly inject. Furthermore, older patients which might require multiple intra-articular corticosteroid injections to maintain comfort may also be at increased risk for laminitis, especially those suffering from pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). PPID is the most common endocrinopathy of older equids, affecting up to 30 percent of horses over 15 years of age (Ireland, 2011). In addition to putting these horses at increased risk of laminitis, PPID can contribute to muscle atrophy, anhidrosis or hyperhidrosis, and immunosuppression. Advancing age may also bring on changes in body weight (often accompanied by changes in saddle fit) and abnormalities of dentition. Maintaining comfort, health, and performance can clearly become more challenging through the horse's life. The attending veterinarian must consider all aspects of the animal's condition to help maximize their competitive edge. Fortunately, veterinarians have more in their arsenal for these animals than ever before.
