In order to understand the quality variations in refuse-derived fuel (RDF), we need to investigate the primary source of this potential fuel. The main sources of RDF include: Municipal solid waste (MSW); Construction and demolition waste (C&D); Commercial and industrial waste (C&I). Generally, C&I waste, in most cases, is available in larger volume with a stable quality (ie automotive industry wastes). C&D waste exhibits bigger differences in calorific value and density, with the layout for the preparation line being changed with respect to input quality and final RDF quality. The most complex preparation will take place if MSW is to be treated.
