In a cement industry story that has all the elements of high drama, farce and tragedy, Lafarge has finally acted as 'kingmaker' and has agreed to take Brazilian cement assets in exchange for its 17.28% stake in Portuguese cement producer Cimpor, from Brazilian company Votorantim Cimentos. Via the swap, Lafarge will strengthen its positioning in this key emerging market, where it will rank third in terms of production capacity. In doing the deal, Lafarge signed Cimpor's fate, signaling the end of a battle between Brazilian cement producers over control of Cimpor. The new assets are expected to raise Lafarge's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in Brazil by Euro85m as of 2011 and by more than Eurol 00m in 2012.
