Cementos Mexicanos (Cemex) was formed following the merger of rivals Cementos Hidalgo and Cementos Portland Monterrey in 1931. It grew from a local player in the 1950s and 1960s to become the largest Mexican manufacturer of cement in 1976. It has since become the third largest manufacturer of cement in the world, behind Lafarge and Holcim. As of the 31 December 2009, Cemex was the third largest cement manufacturer in the world, following a rapid expansion over the past 30 years. During this time, it acquired a number of smaller Mexican plants in the 1980s before reaching out into the Caribbean, Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, USA and more recently Asia and Europe.
