摘要

The tussle over cement prices is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. While cement manufacturers are sticking to their guns against the demand for a reduction in prices, the government too is showing no signs of reviewing its budget proposal of higher excise on costlier cement. The cement industry feels prices should be market-determined while the government is hoping reduction in cement prices would quell inflationary forces. The annual .ate of inflation has climbed to a two-year high of close to 6.5 percent. Cement manufacturers remained tight-lipped after a meeting with finance minister P Chidambaram and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion secretary Ajay Dua. "They 'manufacturers) are of the view that nothing can be done to reduce prices," officials said.
