Cement has been imported into shallow-draught ports in Europe for many years, but consolidation of the industry and the availability of low-cost product from the Far East and China may now change the economics of the system (especially if freight rates fall). This paper examines the possibility that European deep-water ports will become the norm for import of cement (or clinker) from outside of Europe.
