To conclude, the CSI has undeniably been a world leader in its efforts to make a global industry more sustainable. It has been ahead of the game since it was formed at the end of the last century - a remarkable voluntary initiative which has not been driven by any legislative imperative. Its progress over the last five years has given the CSI the confidence to think bigger and with the worlds first industry-wide CO_2 protocol now in place, it is an exemplary industry for its proposed sectoral approach - whereby an industry sector such as cement, rather than a country or a single facility, might assume global, or regional, emissions or efficiency performance targets. Significantly, the roadmap that emerged from the United Nations Bali Climate Change Conference expressed support for sector-specific approaches as a key route for global greenhouse gas mitigation. So the answer to whether the CSI has delivered has to be 'yes' - the work of the CSI over the last five years has seen the sector make great strides in its work to embed sustainability at the heart of the cement manufacturing process. Howard Klee sums it up: "The cement companies recognise that creating a truly sustainable industry is essential to both their own continued existence and to help the world meet the challenges of climate change and managing greenhouse gas emissions. They will continue to work with this at the forefront of their efforts." The weight and influence this unique voluntary initiative now carries will ensure that they have an ongoing key role to play at the policy table at both national and international level.
