The Taiheiyo Cement Group is Japan's largest cement manufacturer, as well as an important producer of other materials such as ceramics and electronics. Its operations in 2007 were hindered by a variety of factors, chiefly being the downturn in the US housing market and stagnating demand for cement. However, this was offset by increasing demand in China, ASEAN members and other countries in Asia. Net sales in 2007 amounted to 9.3billion US dollars, a drop of 1.4 percent compared to the 9.4 billion US dollars achieved in 2006. This equated to a net income for 2007 of 204.5 million US dollars, a fall of 16 percent compared to 2006. Profits fell throughout its business interests, including mineral resources, construction materials, and ceramics. However, its waste treatment programmes performed well.
