The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is made of former nations that were once part of the USSR, and in terms of organisational structure the CIS is similar to the first European Community. The countries that make up the CIS are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Between 2003-2008 and before the onset of the current global financial crisis, the cement industry in the CIS enjoyed sustained growth of roughly 50 percent. The reasons for this growth was rising prices and increased urbanisation and infrastructure as these countries emerged from their Soviet past. According to market analysis, a total of 100Mt of cement was produced in this region in 2008, equivalent to 15billion US dollars.
