摘要

The ISO General Assembly met in Stockholm, Sweden, from 23 to 28 September, 2002. The Swedish capital proved just the serene, beautiful and magnificently hospitable setting needed for the hard work and necessary decision-making ahead, and allowed efficient progress to be made on many fronts in the quest for the best standards developed in the best conditions for everybody. As ISO President, Mr. Mario Cortopassi, said: "Sweden is known the world over for its highly developed social conscience, and within ISO, this is reflected in SIS's efforts to ensure that developing countries share in the benefits of participation in international standardization." It was therefore most fitting that a workshop on the subject of developing countries' participation in standards development should be held here in conjunction with the General Assembly - the topic was much broached throughout the event - and that an open session on energy should be held in a country that puts respect for the environment high on its agenda. The General Assembly was held under the sign of reinforced cooperation between all the actors - members, industry, regional and international organizations - to advance the cause of standardization. Mr. Mario Cortopassi said: "When world events provide enough reasons for despair, it is surely a matter of pride and optimism that thousands of men and women of different political and religious beliefs, racial origins and cultural backgrounds can come together within ISO and communicate and cooperate on the difficult task of achieving international consensus on standards that help raise levels of quality, safety, reliability, efficiency and interchangeability, as well as in providing such benefits at an economical cost." The General Assembly in Sweden was the occasion of a reinforcing of links, a broadening of partnerships and relationships and, at the same time, a tightening of the ISO "family" unity the better to face the challenges of globalization.
