With the next tranche of government cuts scheduled to kick in, what are the prospects for the feed industry as we move into the New Year? In the FAO's latest Food Outlook - Global Market Analysis, the organisation's index of food prices is at its highest level since July 2008 and only eight points off the record high noted in June 2008. The index, which measures average monthly price changes for a basket consisting of cereals, oils, dairy, meat and sugar, has risen thirty-four points since its last report in June 2010. Almost contemporaneously with the surge in world food prices came the implosion of much of the western world's banking system and the onset of recession together with the announcement, in the UK, of massive spending cuts over the nextfour years. With the publication of Family Food 2009, it is possible to see how food consumption in the UK was affected by the recession that gathered pace in 2008 and early 2009. Roger Dean has been doing the sums and looking at how food and, especially, livestock product consumption might be affected in 2010.
