Since the first part of this article was published, grain and other raw material markets have been in turmoil, following the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and continuing unrest in the Middle East including hostilities in Libya. Nevertheless, recently published data allows us to make a preliminary assessment of how the relationship between finished product prices and raw material costs developed during 2010. Roger Dean has been examining the available data and finds that raw material costs moved significantly against the price of finished feed in the second half of 2010. Subsequently, it will be possible to look at how feed prices have developed relative to the prices received by livestock producers and to draw inferences about the future commercial policy of a variety of stakeholders in the market place. With few exceptions, feed prices have moved against livestock producer prices, suggesting that opportunities to return feed manufacturers' margins to more 'normal' levels will be, for the moment at least, limited; there may be more mileage in waiting for a downturn in feed costs, although this remains a highly uncertain prospect.
