Lesotho is a mountainous enclave within South Africa (the border with the Republic of South Africa surrounds the country over a length of 909 km.). The country's total land area is 30 350 km~2. It enjoys a temperate climate, with cool to cold, dry winters, and hot, wet summers. Most of the land is highlands, with plateaus, hills, and mountains. The total population stands at 2129000. Capital is Maseru, with 150 000 inhabitants, situated at 1 700 m. A person from Lesotho is called a Mosotho (in the singular), and Basotho in the plural. English is the official language. About 80 percent are Christian.As natural resources, Lesotho has water; agricultural and grazing land, some diamonds and other minerals. Its economy is based on subsistence agriculture, livestock, and remittances from miners employed in South Africa. In 1996 their remittances added about 33 percent to GDP.
