Break crops can be more than just a chance to rejuvenate paddocks - they can pay off big time in the bank balance according to the latest research. The benefits of incorporating break crops into farming systems in the southern cropping region have been validated in experimental work in three states. Under the climatic conditions that have prevailed since the start the project in 2010, crop sequences that included brassica or legume break crops were found to be as profitable as - and in many instances, more profitable than - continuous wheat. The findings were part of a GRDC-funded collaborative project involving CSIRO, the Victorian DEPI, NSW DPI and seven grower groups.
