Developed economies depend on sustained large flows of natural resources. At the same time, they exert pressures on their natural resource base. These pressures are caused at each phase of the life cycle of the resources; by using natural resources as supplies, e.g. extracting raw materials or using natural land for farming and built-up areas, and by emissions to air, water and soil arising during production, product use and waste management. With almost half a billion citizens the European Union's internal market accounts for a significant portion of worldwide natural resources use. However, as domestic reserves and production cannot cover the demand the European Union (EU) has to import large quantities of natural resources. These contribute significantly to environmental damage outside the EU, for example, in poor farming, forestry and mining practices.
