At the Hambach open-cast mine of RWE Rheinbraun AG endless conveyor belts reinforced with steel ropes are used for bulk transport. Because of the sometimes high loads under harsh conditions the belt condition deteriorates in the course of time. The current condition as criterion for belt repair or belt change is generally evaluated by inspection of the belt and subjective evaluation by maintenance staff. To change from a subjective to a condition-orientated evaluation of the belt condition, attempts to ascertain and diagnose the steel-rope bracing of steel-rope conveyor belts were initiated in 1996 and further developed to the present day.
