This paper discusses the potential for precision agriculture in California agriculture. It first describes information management technologies for site-specific management (yield mapping, yield monitoring, global positioning systems, geographic information systmems, remote sensing, etc), It goes on to discuss environmental and regulatory issues which may affect uptake of these technologies. It is noted that adoption is currently limited in California, but is likely to increase as costs of the technologies fall. Effects of more widespread adoption may include farm consolidation and an expansion in the market for skilled employees with a corresponding decrease in the number of unskilled positions.
