Life can change with startling speed and scope. Seven years ago, by choice, I moved into a tiny caretaker's cabin hidden in the mountainous woods, with no telephone, running water, or indoor facilities. I wrote with a laptop that I carried up to the main house every morning to jack in to the Matrix and the Internet. I collected rainwater in barrels and filtered it for drinking and cooking. I came to the woods to live simply—and did so. Thoreau only lasted two years at Walden.
