摘要

Mixing perennials and annuals with herbs and vegetables keeps both flowers and food on the table. Within a year of installing a vegetable garden that measured 48 feet by 72 feet, approximately the same dimensions as my house, my mistake became apparent. 1 discovered that a garden that size can produce more vegetables than my family, my friends, and my neighbors could possibly eat. But because I had already invested in a permanent garden fence, reducing the size of the garden was not an option. Instead, I redesigned it with the aim of balancing practicality with beauty. To achieve this, I divided the garden into thirds, devoting the center to a four-square herb garden, the outside border to low-maintenance perennials and self-sowing annuals, and thespace in between to vegetables, annuals, and the occasional testing of new perennials. The garden still provides me and my neighbors with fresh vegetables to eat, but it is far less work than it used to be, and it is beautiful as well.
