Fishing by foreign tuna vessels is increasing in Peruvian waters following government incentives to take advantage of migratory stocks caught off Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela. Tuna stocks have increased off Peru's northern coast since ocean temperatures rose last year. Javier Reategui, the Peruvian fisheries minister, says 15 tuna boats have been given permits end that up to 43 could apply. They must, however, sell their catches to Peruvian canning companies. The Austral Group, with fish canningplants at Paita and Coishco, is the first company to take advantage, although at least one other company was reported to be preparing to follow.
