摘要

The career of a fisheries professional represents a diverse array of goals, endeavors, accomplishments, and contributions which occur in academic, research, management, private industry, or public sector environments. Development of the individual fisheries professional to proficiency levels in each of these arenas is dependent upon the individual's ability to pursue opportunities within and outside of the day-to-day job. In response to societal and workforce changes, professionals today are more mobile and generally hold several different positions with different skill and expertise levels throughout their career. The era of working for one agency throughout one's entire career is no longer a given assumption. Professionals in fisheries science are well aware of the growing need for retaining employees and acquiring new ones as our existing workforce retires or moves on to other opportunities. Individual fisheries professionals need to demonstrate skills and accountability to employers, state and federal governments, funding agencies, tax payers, and review boards. Continuing education is one of the tools available to both employers and employees, where staff can acquire and demonstrate new skills, and implement programs that meet the changing demands of society.
