This article discusses the major legal provisions that facilitate international trade in organic food products. Aspects considered include: legal frameworks adopted by countries that are major consumers of organic foods (US, EU countries, Japan); organic production and processing standards in different countries; the impact on global trade of mixing governmental and private standards; basic standards applicable to organic foods in a globalized marketplace; US and EU certification and accreditation rules; the Japanese perspective; and future challenges for globalization of organic standards.
