Study on the Utilization of Cull Dates for Bioethanol Fuel Production in Arabic Countries

Bioetanol from inexpensive sugar rich substrates is one of the current sustainable alternative as substitute fossil fuel. Dates processing and packing generate a number of by-products for which valorization processes might be developed in order to improve the economy of the operation as a whole and to decrease the disposal problems and costs. Cull dates contained about 58.6% fermentable sugars. Conditions affect extract sugar from cull dates such as solvent:cull dates ratio, temperature, and time were studied and 95.7 %from the fermentable sugars involved in cull dates were eluted. Ten Saccharomyces servesiae strains were screened to select the more promising strain.5. cerevisiae F-727 gave the highest ethanol yield 9.2% v/v in sugar solution mediumcontained 20 % w/v fermentable sugars. Nutritional demands from macro and micronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, magnesium and zinc supplementation were studied and optimized. Sugar concentration and fermentation along the time were also investigated. The highest bioethanol yield l2.0%v/v was attained by S. cerevisiae F-727when the fermentation was applied using 20 %w/v fermentable sugar solution supplemented with (g/L) ammonium nitrate 1.5, potassium dihydrogen phosphate 0.5, magnesium sulfate0.5and zinc sulfate 0.05 after 36 hrs at 36°C. The fermentation efficiency was 97.2%, residual sugars 0.22%.The fermentation process resulted yeast biomass yield 13.6 g dry yeast / L.
