The recent history of iron ore prices has been characterised by high price volatility. A graphic illustration of the extent of the price changes experienced in the iron ore market is provided in chart 7. This shows that a significant jump in iron ore prices occurred between 2004 and 2006, at the same time as Chinese crude steel production jumped from 269 million tonnes in 2004 to 422 million tonnes in 2006. The vast increase in demand, along with the creation of a spot market, propelled the price of iron ore to unprecedented levels and increased the margin on sales of the miners to fabulous levels. The chart also shows that in 2010-2013 the price of iron ore has fluctuated much more than the price of steel products.
