It was a typical day in the tropics -- humid to the saturation point. Yet on the slopes of Mount Kaindi on the island of New Guinea, the temperature gave little indication of the equator's proximity. There, at an elevation of 6,000 feet, it felt like a pleasant early summer day back home in Virginia. I was climbing Mount Kaindi that day in November 1980 as part of a field trip to collect spiders and insects. In particular, I was searching for a rare weevil called the garden beetle, which carries a miniature garden of lichens and mosses on its back.
