Currently, the Chinese government is preparing for the 2008 'Green' Olympic Games, with the help of bedding plants (seasonal displays). Plant breeders think that this event will inspire Chinese consumers, who are hardly showing interest in buying bedding plants. China - an important market in the long run: Ryuji Suzuki: "I visit China twice a year and notice the quality improvement and the increase of the market for bedding plants. 3% of the Chinese population is considered to be very wealthy; this is equal to 30 million people. Therefore, I have no reservations when assuming that consumers in China will become a very important market in the long run. However, for now, the government is exceedingly the main buyer of bedding plants and has chosen tomake the 2008 Olympic Games explicitly green in character. For three years, Takii has been investing in the competition that will ultimately lead to orders for supplying large quantities of bedding plants. Although a decision based on the plantings at the Botanical Garden in Beijing still has to be made, we are convinced that at least some Takii varieties will be considered for planting during those Games."
