As more flowers are produced abroad and with the home base in the Netherlands staying more or less stable, the famous Dutch auctions need to enter a new phase if they are to maintain their superiority in the global marketplace. How better than to unite to face the increasing competition from direct sales and to offer their services in emerging markets. The fusion of the two largest Dutch flower auctions, Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer and FloraHolland has been well publicised and, providing the competitionauthority doesn't block it, it is expected to happen by the end of the year. The general opinion in the Dutch industry is that it is a good move: Non-competitive aspects of the trade, such as the size of the trollies and notification of sale letters willbe standardised, so processes become more efficient, leading to less costs. Overseas producers may not notice any difference. For them flowers are shipped to the Netherlands, sold and a few days later they receive a payment. That will still happen. However, non-Dutch members and suppliers can expect to receive more attention in future as they become increasingly important to the auctions.
