Wal-Mart, Sysco, Kroger and seven other mega buyers have instructed fresh produce suppliers in a letter that they're expected to meet three major milestones this year as part of the industry's Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI).The Produce Marketing Association, United Fresh Produce Association and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association banded together in 2007 to launch the PTI after the groups recognized a need for a whole-chain solution to tracing produce. A steering committee of 40 companies representing the produce supply chain agreed in August 2008 on certain milestones to move the industry toward a standardized traceability system with the ultimate goal of tracing every case of produce by 2012 (See FCN Aug. 11, 2008, Page 12).
