摘要

This paper focuses on how the US agricultural and food processing sectors are affected by changes in global markets. One of the critical influences on the US food sector is rising incomes and related changes in the diets of consumers around the world. It is suggested that although rising global incomes strengthen the influence of global consumers on food demand, these gains in income do not necessarily translate into guaranteed gains for the US food sector because of increased competition. Macroeconomic factors that complicate global prospects for the US food sector are discussed. Also examined is the importance of global consumers to future US food sector growth.
