Tough new rules for Salmonella, Listeria and other foodborne pathogens are set to take effect in the European Union Jan. 1. The new regulation sets harmonized food acceptability criteria as a means of avoiding differing interpretations of EU law in the 25 member-states. Any food with contamination levels above the regulation's limits must be rejected as unacceptable.
