For decades, Types K and L copper tube in annealed (soft) temper have been the preferred material for water services, the service being an underground line from a large water main under a street to a house or building.Reliability is of paramount importance for a water service, because it must buried below the frost line to avoid freezing. In many Canadian cities where older neighbourhoods still have lead or galvanized steel water services, programs are in place to gradually remove and upgrade systems. In the City of Toronto, about 140,000 lead or galvanized steel services are scheduled for replacement. There are an additional 180,000 old small-diameter copper services (1/2 in.) that will also be upgraded to either 3/4 in. or 1 in. size for increased flow capability~1.
