摘要

To test an innovative protocol of manual and manipulative therapy and compare it to the results of a night splint for symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate hallux abducto valgus The authors formed a parallel, randomized controlled trial comparing night splints to a manipulative protocol for the treatment of symptomatic hallux abducto valgus. The control group received the night splints and instructions on that usage. The experimental group received graded joint mobilization. The protocol is described within this manuscript and the authors' reference number 14. Participants in the manual and manipulative protocol received a maximum of four treatments over a two-week period. The frequency of treatment was twice per week. The treatment for both groups was two weeks with follow-ups at one week and one month. No treatment for either group was provided during the time to follow up. Data was collected prior to initiating treatment, at the end of the treatment period, and at one-week and one-month follow-up. Pain was measured by a visual analogue scale; the range of motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint was measured, as well as the foot function index. The results were compiled and analyzed statistically.
