From April 2003 through July 2005, patients who presented at eight different emergency departments across England with severe ankle sprain and at least a 3-day history of being unable to bear weight on the affected limb were recruited. All patients were over 16 years old, none had a high risk of deep vein thrombosis, and none of the injuries were over 7 days old. A total of 584 patients were recruited, their mean age was 30 ± 10.8 years, 337 were male, and the mean body mass index of all patients was 26.3 ± 5 kg/m~2.
