摘要

The true depth of a formation is obtained from well logs and other insitu information. These same well logs are used to derive a very accurate measure of the seismic propagation velocity in the rocks along the well track, however the information loses its reliability when moving away from the borehole. If a survey has multiple well logs and they cover different geographic parts of the survey area, then by simple correlations or identification of similar formations identified in the logs, it is possible to construct a velocity field covering the area of interest. The problem is that uncertainty in the velocities grows as you move far away from the boreholes and the information can sometimes carry a high degree of uncertainty arid hence risk.
