An Internet search provides no definitive answer as to who coined the first version of the saying that 'it is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future.' All the usual suspects from Albert Einstein and Mark Twain to Sam Goldwyn receive honourable mentions. The sentimental favourite has to be Danish physicist Niels Bohr, if only because he was responsible for numerous other wise aphorisms. It was he who reputedly said: 'Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it',thereby neatly explaining why some of us remain totally unshocked.
