Historically, database design has been constrained by technology and by purpose. Cost and performance of .the operating systems, networks, and hardware used to set limits on the complexity of the design and the volumes of data that could be stored. Today, however, affordable new technologies offer better performance and storage capability, therefore the time is right to take more 'cutting edge' approaches to database design.
