An accurate velocity model is required for positioning seismic signals, recorded in time, to their true subsurface positions in depth by means of migration. Various velocity estimation methods can be applied to derive a subsurface macro velocity model from seismic data. In the last decade pre-stack depth migration velocity analysis has become popular because of its sensitivity to the model. Moreover, for proper imaging in case of complex structures pre-stack depth migration is assumed to be the best solution.
