The concept of fully instrumenting the seabed with four-component seismic stations is a seductive one. Time-lapse seismic data can be brought to a new level of data quality with unprecedented repeatability and detailed, multi-azimuth sampling of the seismic wavefield. Once in place, surveys can be acquired cheaply and frequently using a converted supply vessel, and the operation is not affected by obstructions from platforms, drill rigs, or FPSOs. Many believe that this is the only sensible way towards costeffective reservoir surveillance – and yet the technology has not taken off as fast as many of us thought likely and significant concerns remain about the upfront costs, the technology to use, the value of the technology, and the people and organizational issues that have caused several projects to fail at the concept planning stage.
