At 4.30 am a spit of land under the bridge crossing Nha Trangs' Cai river heaves with all manner of fishy delights, caught overnight on the South China Sea. Amid the fishing boat hulls, Vietnamese women transfer the bounty from boats to the shore in waterborne craft which, from a distance, look like oversized wicker shopping baskets. Until now, 'coracles' were objects in childhood adventure stories and I do wonder if I am hallucinating.Ten years later, sitting outside Ripon Cathedral with a 'currach' (a Celtic ocean-going version of a coracle) in tow and awaiting an audience with the dean, I relate my Vietnamese moment to Dave Purvis. Dave assures me that coracles are still in use around the world (India, Iraq, Tibet, Wales) and most populously in Vietnam, where they are still workday vehicles. As current chairman of the Coracle Society and builder of approximately 300 coracles, Dave is an enthusiast of these diminutive and primitivewaterborne craft.
