摘要

Common alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a native British tree but still a puzzle, and just a little peculiar. Historically suffering the same fate as its close cousin, the hazel (Family Betulaceae), alder trees were cut and coppiced since time immemorial. The net result is more alder shrubs than trees, but by the waterside rather than wayside, the natural home of hazel. For a tree so used to water alder timber is surprisingly susceptible to rotting once out of water and, although the wood burns badly, itscharcoal makes excellent gunpowder. British folklore always had alder down as a 'bad omen' tree (unlike hazel), which is not surprising given the watery places where it thrived. Alder is an underrated British native tree more valued in North America as naturalised 'black alder'.
