Funerals put us in contact with people during the most heart-wrenching and devastating chapters of their lives. Whether the deceased is old or young, suffered a long-term illness or passed suddenly, the death of a loved one is, without a doubt, agonizing for the ones left behind.Unless you are the designated florist of a particular funeral home, anytime a client comes to you for sympathy work, he or she has done so for a particular reason. It may be that the client was put off by the projected cost of another florist. Or perhaps—hopefully—the client has worked with you before, had a positive experience and feels comfortable coming to you for this all-important order. Funerals, celebrations of life and memorials are incredibly expensive and we need to respect that clients don't see work like this on a regular basis, so they could easily get sticker shock. Furthermore, they are grieving and often in shock. A lot of sympathy work involves holding their hands, listening to their needs and delivering something that brings them comfort. Showing them compassion is what it's all about.
