Often described as being wild, rugged and remote, the commercial forests of the Scottish Highlands certainly have a diverse geography. Stretching from the clean spruce of the steep and wet west coast, the vast, deep-peat Lodgepole plantations of the north and the drier Scots pine woodlands of Speyside, there are vast differences. This is perhaps hardly surprising given that the area of Highland region at 30,659 square kilometres is larger than that of the whole of Belgium at 30,528 square kilometres!
