Recent in-house reports,1 compiled by analysts at Barclays Capital, constitute a multifaceted wake-up call for the natural gas industry. The reports warn that gas-fired generation in the U.S. does not have "an assured future" despite its cost advantages over other baseload plant alternatives. The analysts cited at least three key factors that will constrain gas-fueled generation: (1) the economy, (2) the lack of growth in electricity demand and (3) a "large wave" of expected renewable energy generation that will take some of the growth that would have gone to gas. "Weak demand growth paired with a large renewables addition will significantly mute gas-fired plant output," the analysts said. Favorable treatment of gas in any climate change legislation, especially when compared to coal, is also important to the future prospects for expanding gas use, and in that matter the natural gas industry needs to step up its lobbying efforts. For the reports on power sector demand, the analysts relied on data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
