U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports could create tens of thousands of domestic jobs while having only minimal impacts on domestic natural gas prices, a new report released on May 15 by ICF International conlcudes. The authors of U.S. LNG Exports: Impacts on Energy Markets and the Economy studied the energy market and economic impacts of LNG export levels of up to 4 Bcf/d, 8 Bcf/d, and 16 Bcf/d by 2035. The report, produced on behalf of the American Petroleum Institute (API), also concluded that LNG exports would spur strong growth in U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). However, U.S. companies would face considerable competition for LNG sales abroad, with at least 63 international LNG export projects currently planned or under construction. In order to inform the current policy debate surrounding the granting of licenses for U.S. exports of LNG, the API commissioned ICF International to undertake this study of the energy market and economic impacts of LNG exports.
