摘要

One of the main targets of forest growth and yield research is to scrutinise experience-based knowledge by means of experiments, concerning in particular the effects of thinning regimes. The long-term trial Elmstein 20, one of the first thinning experiments established in Europe, was designed more than 130 years ago. It is important to. examine the biological principles behind this trial, since the results may be useful in understanding forest growth and in drawing new conclusions.
