In Brussels the European Parliament is discussing new regulation concerning the placing of pesticides on the market. If the proposed cut-off criteria are adopted into law, many active ingredients used in pesticides - in particular insecticides - usedin agriculture today could be banned. ECPA is very much worried about the consequences, Euros Jones explains. The European Parliament is not listening to scientists. The new, proposed pesticides legislation is based on political arguments. The outcome will be dramatic; looking at the most recent Parliament vote, up to 25% of all now available pesticides will disappear in the coming ten years," warns Euros Jones, ECPA Regulatory Affairs Director. The European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) representsthe crop protection industry interests at European level. Its members include all major companies and national associations across Europe. ECPA is very much worried about the recent developments in Brussels. "If the proposed regulation comes into action, it will no longer be profitable for many growers to produce their crops. In the coming 10 -20 years the yields could be reduced dramatically up to more than 30%." Fruit and Veg Tech interviewed Mr. Jones in the first week of November, when the European Parliament (EP) was discussing the proposal.
