In the last issue of Fruit & Veg Tech, the article "Protected cultivation rising in China" described the greenhouse structures used in China. This second and concluding article highlights the main production areas and the most common types of crops gr own there. Production of fiuits and vegeta-bles in China has increased very fast during the last three decades. Total output in 2001-2002 was evaluated at 350-400 million ton/year which, according to the FAO, is a rise of 700% since 1970. It can be expla ined by four main factors: 1) Replacement in the mid 1980's of the commune system by a new rural management system (the Household Farm Responsibility System), through which local collectives allocated farmers long-term use rights to agricultural land; 2) Conversion of about 1,2 million ha of arable farmland into horticultural land; 3) Improvements in seed supply and use of hybrids; 4) Increased use of fertilisers and pesticides.
