This first themed issue of Fungal Biology Reviews deals withfungal endophytes and their different roles and impacts ingrassland and forest ecosystems. An endophyte can bedefined as an asymptomatic fungus living inside a plant, although many alternative definitions have been proposed.This diverse, ubiquitously distributed, polyphyletic group offungi is still poorly studied and the relative costs and benefitsto plant hosts harbouring these fungi have only been examined in a few cases. Recent progress in understanding thesefungi and their different interactions with plants is outlinedhere in five articles.
