Antifungal peptides come of age

Plants, vertebrate and invertebrate animals, and even fungi produce a broad range of antimicrobial peptides that exhibit potent cytotoxic activity against a broad-spectrum of fungi and thus serve as host defence molecules. They are major components of the innate immune defence arsenal of these organisms against a wide range of fungal pathogens. A rich diversity of antifungal peptides exists, and the same peptide sequence is rarely found from two closely related plant or animal species. Because of their potent antifungal activity, there has been a great deal of interest in exploiting these peptides as commercial antifungal agents in agriculture as well as medicine. In fact, significant research has been carried out to develop these naturally occurring antifungal peptides as therapeutic agents against microbial infections. Furthermore, small chemically synthesized antifungal peptides have been generated and their structure–activity relationships as well as mechanisms of antifungal action have been extensively investigated.
