Parking areas often pose a challenge. If you keep a vehicle in your garden, how do you avoid the municipal-carpark-look? The trick is to green up any space possible, including walls and fences, with tough plants that can cope with a little trampling and exhaust pollution.My design shows how to tackle an existing driveway. If you're creating a new one, check the regulations. Legally the surface needs to be free-draining, rather having a run off towards street drains. Gravel is ideal and creates a 'softer' garden feel. A tree like Amelanchier lamarckii that can cope with pollution is a great addition, breaking up space at eye level and helping create a boundary between neighbours.
